2025 Portable Generator Safety Policy

As part of our continued effort to ensure the safety of all pullers, spectators, and staff, the PEI Truck and Tractor Pull Championships has established the following generator policy for 2025. With many competitors using campers and support trailers equipped with generators, it's essential that all generators are operated safely and in compliance with provincial safety guidelines.

General Generator Use Guidelines

  • Only operate generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas
  • Keep all generators at least 10 feet away from any camper, trailer, tent, or enclosed structure.
  • Never run generators indoors or in enclosed spaces such as trailers, under awnings, or near building openings.
  • Ensure that generator exhaust is pointed away from people, trailers, and tents to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) exposure.

Fire Safety Requirements

  • Generators must be placed on stable ground, away from dry grass or other flammable materials.
  • All fuel must be stored in approved, properly labeled containers, a minimum of 15 feet away from any generator or heat source.
  • Refuel only when the generator is turned off and has cooled completely.
  • Do not leave generators running unattended.
  • A working ABC-rated fire extinguisher must be easily accessible at your pit site.

New for 2025:

  • There will be three clearly marked fire extinguisher stations located throughout the pit area for emergency use.
  • A fully operational fire truck will be on-site for the duration of the event.
  • If a fire-related emergency arises, please alert the nearest staff member immediately or go directly to a fire department representative onsite. They are trained to assist with any such incidents quickly and safely.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness

  • Carbon monoxide is a clear, odorless, and deadly gas.
  • Always place generators downwind from living and gathering areas.
  • Do not attempt to ventilate a generator area by opening windows or doors nearby ‐ this can pull CO into enclosed spaces.
  • Watch for signs of CO poisoning: headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, or loss of consciousness. Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms occur.

Generator Setup and Maintenance

  • Do not overload generators ‐ know their wattage rating and stay within safe limits.
  • Use three-prong grounded extension cords rated for outdoor use and heavy load.
  • Check cords and generator components for damage before each use.
  • Follow your manufacturer's guidelines for regular maintenance and safe operation.

Compliance and Event Oversight

  • Event staff will be monitoring the pits for safe generator usage.
  • Non-compliance with this policy may result in your generator being shut down until the issue is resolved.
  • Everyone (staff, pullers, and families) is encouraged to monitor nearby setups and speak with staff if unsafe practices are observed.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe, family-friendly environment. By following these rules, you help ensure a fun and worry-free experience for all.

Thank you from all the PEI Truck and Tractor Pull Championships Committee.
